Drug, alcohol abuse prevalent 9 months after Katrina
« H » email link
Adverse psychological effects caused by Hurricane Katrina's destruction last year are showing up nine months later in the form of substance abuse in the New Orleans area, a recent survey shows. Of the 603 people polled, 46 percent said they experience continued stress and anxiety since the storm made landfall Aug. 29, said John King, executive director for the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Greater New Orleans Area. "The first few weeks after the storm, people were trying to be nice to one another," King said. Now, suicides, domestic abuse cases, divorces and road rage incidents are on the rise. posted Thursday, 8 June 2006 |
