Primary Psychiatry. 2006;13(10):32-35

Dr. Arnold is currently a scientist-track investigator and staff psychiatrist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. His research activities focus on the molecular genetics of early-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Dr. Arnold's clinical work involves the assessment and treatment of children with OCD and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. He has received numerous awards in recognition for his work, including the Career Development Award of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and the Government of Ontario/Gregory M. Brown Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology.

How do you conceptualize obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?

OCD can be conceptualized as a single disorder with various presentations, as separate disorders with similar presentations, or as a spectrum disorder. The description of OCD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, (DSM-IV)1 has been helpful in the development of treatments that have been somewhat successful. However, researchers and clinicians working with OCD have started to define it a little differently. The tendency lately has been toward thinking of it as a group of disorders with similar manifestations. However, the exact way to think about OCD is a matter of some controversy and discussion in the field.
