People Of All Ages Find Laughter Reduces Stress

(CP) - On Saturday mornings for the past year or so, people of all ages have been gathering in a basement room at a public library in west-end Toronto to chuckle, chortle, giggle and guffaw.

...Once greetings are over, a couple dozen members grab a chair or cushion and plop down on the floor - all except Judith who joyfully parks her wheelchair in the circle. Rackett discusses the lesson plan and receives input from members. As things get underway, no one seems too concerned about what people upstairs in the library might think of all the belly laughing, shouting and other raucous goings on.

"I bet they'll really love this one," says Rackett, tongue in cheek, as she laughs uproariously at the start of a vigorous jumping-about exercise.

Laughter yoga originated in India with Dr. Madan Kataria, a family physician who established a club in 1995 in Mumbai with the aim of helping himself and a few friends feel good inside, relieve stress, have some fun and see the world differently through a good laugh-fest.
