I am a 46 year old who suffers from Bufonophobia (fear of toads) -- I have only known of 2 other people in my life with the same fear and one of them is my sister. I am not sure why I have this fear -- but it is crippling - especially in Texas during spring time -- after it rains - I WILL NOT go outside. I had one that appeared on the sidewalk of the house I used to live in and it literally kept me hostage in my own home -- terrified to leave for fear of it. I once walked my dog in the evening and when we went to go back inside - there was a GIANT TOAD on my door stoop -- me and my dog slept in my car that night -- anyone I have told this story too things I'm ridiculous! Let me here from other Bufonophobes!

I don't have that fear but I feel sorry for anyone that has a fear of any animal. I myself have Pneumatiphobia(Fear of spirits) and it sucks LOL. But I do have 5 fire-bellied toads as pets and 3 bullfrogs and a treefrog and an African dwarf frog! and They are completly harmless.

I also have a great fear of these animals and understand the need to stay clear of them, I have suffer all my life with this phobia. I understand people laugh and they deem harmless......but not to me, I have no fear of heights, snakes, bugs, lizards or tight spaces.....no one makes fun of these fears, why is this such a joke to so many people??

my fear of toads is really effecting me. i have cut the grass a few times and each time i find my self tryinig to run into the house but my knees lock up and get shaky, my breath shortens and throat tightens up, i immediatly feel dizzy and sick and start cry and hyper ventalating, and i feel my body , ecspecially my ears heating up. i dont know when the fear stared, as a kid i used to go out with my freinds and catch toads, in spring and summer come i know what is coming, toads! i also have a pool in my back yard and toads tent to gather around in the folliage. i was swimming once and a toad was in the pool about 3 feet from my swimming slowly toward me and i thought i was going to drownd, or die becaus eall the symptoms above came into play again, and i could not swim thank gosh my parents were there. i cant help it and i dont know what to do my freinds sometimes joke around and wen they find a frog theuy will pick it up and bring it o me i tend to get really mad after, but they dont understand what its like if anyone knows what i can do to help control my fear, please comment back!

I am 23 years old and have suffered from bufonophobia since I was a child, I only recently discovered that there is actually a name for this phobia and that I am not the only one suffering from it. I am scared of toads and frogs, all kinds. I have similar experiences with people who find my fear amusing and think it is hilarious to scare me with toads or frogs that they have picked up and I end up hysterical. I live in QLD in Australia where we are home to an astronomical population of a breed of toads called cane toads which are prevalent here in the spring and summer and grow to massive sizes. If I need to go outside during this time, my boyfriend has to come with me, he will walk ahead of me to ensure there are no toads, he will walk me to my side of the car, then when we arrive home he will come around and get me out again to ensure I do not have a toad 'encounter'. This is just one of the action plans I have in place to reduce the likelihood of encountering a toad. I have toad nightmares. I get anxious symptoms (sweating, shivering, rapid breathing) just THINKING about toads. In the future I am going to move further south where it is colder and they dont have any toads. That sounds like heaven to me.

Erin, like most phobias this one can be overcome through therapy, particularly Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). The Australian government recently bought psychologists into the Medicare scheme which should mean you can see a therapist for little or no cost (if they bulk bill). Your GP should be able to recommend a CBT therapist in your area.
