Child suicide rate spikes nearly 20 percent [post blackbox warnings]

ABC News Medical Unit

February 5, 2007 - Child and teen suicide rates rose for the first time in more than a decade in 2004 - and many psychological experts said the stronger warning labels that led to a drop in the number of prescriptions for antidepressant drugs may be to blame.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Annual Summary of Vital Statistics released Monday, the suicide rate rose more than 18 percent in those 1 to 19 years old, from 2.2 per 100,000 in 2003 to 2.6 per 100,000 in 2004.

In those 15 to 19 years old, the figures reflected a more than 12 percent rise in suicide, from 7.3 per 100,000 in 2003 to 8.2 per 100,000 in 2004.

This is what many feared would happen. :-(

The quotes figures mean 248 kids who should still be alive, aren't. They mean 248 families are grieving the loss of a child they shouldn't be. Thousands more have lost a friend they should not have. And this is just for the U.S. Worldwide, how many more children have taken their lives, especially in countries like Britain where the anti drug warnings were even more strident?

Contrast this with an often overlooked detail in the youth antidepressants/suicide debate — not one child committed suicide in the studies that lead to the FDA black box warnings!

Black box warnings/fearmongers: 248 - Antidepressants: 0

Perhaps what we really need is black box warnings tattooed on the foreheads of the anti medication campaigners.
