Depression spikes after, not during, holidays

Ozer says that in December, gloomy weather and unfulfilled expectations notwithstanding, there is a decrease in the number of people seeking psychiatric treatment.

"The holiday actually buoys people," Ozer says. "The holiday season is all about hope, so during the season itself they begin to believe maybe things will be different. They have those fantasies and hopes for themselves."

But just as every holiday season must come to an end, so do many of those fantasies. The hospital emergency departments start getting really busy in January. According to Providence statistics, the rate of hospital admissions for mental health reasons jumped 16 percent in January 2004 over the annual monthly average. And Ozer expects a similar spike this year.

"People are brought along by the season itself and then what happens after the holidays, the dreams don't come true, their life doesn't necessarily change, and the highest rates of suicide and suicide attempts are in January," Ozer says. "It's the letdown from the holidays."
