Despite the well-documented efficacy and safety records of benzodiazepines, physicians elect to use agents from a number of pharmaceutical classes to treat insomnia, despite absent safety and efficacy data to support their use. Although antidepressants are the most widely-used "off-label" agents to treat insomnia, other drugs, including antipsychotics, antihistamines, and anticonvulsants, are routinely prescribed for insomnia with little consideration given to risks of side effects associated with their use.
